Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I completed the profile analysis to generate empirical and substantive analysis of the 40 young women’s activities. This revealed various intersections of gender, generation, women's employment, domestic migration and disaster reconstruction. I completed 4 in-depth qualitative interviews in Iwate. The findings complicate and challenge the image of senior and male leadership ofetn assumed by the literature and machizukuri policy. Two papers were written up and presented on 4 occasions, one domestic at the University of Tokyo, and three international, at the Japan Studies Association of Canada, at the Metropolis International Conference, and at the University of California in Los Angeles. In a third paper, I am exploring the policy implications for decreasing birthrates, aging society, community sustainability as fewer young women return to the regions. This raises the urgency of reframing community reconstruction and machizukuri in light of young women’s migration choices and what might constitute more enabling environments for working mothers.
