Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
i) Local research: The Buddhist Astronomy Research Seminar 仏教天文学研究会 (founded at Doshisha University , Aug 2003) continued in Kyoto University in FY2016. During the year, 13 meetings were held at the Institute for Research in Humanities. The annotated translation of Bukkokurekishohen 仏国暦象編 (5 fasc.) in modern Japanese was completed by members of the seminar. The last meeting (No.153) was held on 7/8 Mar 2017. Record of meetings and some of the achievements of the research seminar are made available to the public on the internet. ii) As part of the CESS digitalization project, preliminary approval and confirmation for the online publication and data conversion of CESS have been obtained from the American Philosophical Society and the Institute for the Study of Ancient World, New York University. Description of the project may be found in the grant-in-aid documents under 国際共同研究強化. iii) Overseas research: 1) Fieldworks in Isan and joint-research at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand (Apr 1-30); 2) Joint-research at NYU, New York and Brown University under 国際共同研究強化. iv) Twelve presentations at academic meetings or conferences. An international conference “Cosmos, East and West" was held in New York. Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
- The project progressed smoothly and exceeded what we initially expected thanks to the additional support from 国際共同研究強化. The administrative work related to the local research group was handled by the substitute staff. Most of the overseas events were made possible also with the additional funding. - The digitalization project was made possible by bringing together various parties which include the American Philosophical Society, NYU, Brown University, John Hay Library, IIT Bombay and international scholars who are interested in this project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
i) Publication of the works of the Buddhist Astronomy Research Seminar 仏教天文学研究会. This includes a book consisted of chapters by members on various topics of historical astral science in Asia. Part of the annotated translation and electronic text of 仏国暦象編 are expected to be published. ii) A pilot database is expected to be available online in FY2017. A decision concerning the stakeholder and permanent hosting location of the database will also be made in FY2017. iii) The International Conference on Traditional Sciences in Asia 2017: East-West Encounter in the Science of Heaven and Earth, will be held in Kyoto University, 25-28 Oct 2017. The event is supported partially by this grant-in-aid, together with other funding sources from Kyoto University.
