Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The final decision on the six L2 variables and associated research data collection instruments for the investigation was made - L2 listening (IELTS and TOEIC), L2 vocabulary (LVLT), metacognition of listening (MALQ), audio discrimination ability (Pimsleur LAB), working memory (AWMA), and listening anxiety (FLLAS). I have read numerous publications related to the variables which are the focus of the study. The instruments have been prepared and, where necessary, translated into Japanese.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
In the first year of the project, the key advisor, Professor Vandergrift, died. This initially delayed the project for approximately a year as more extensive reading and consideration of the project was required by the Principal Investigator (applicant). However, in the past year, good progress has been made and the data collection instruments for the six L2 variables have been decided - - L2 listening (IELTS and TOEIC), L2 vocabulary (LVLT), metacognition of listening (MALQ), audio discrimination ability (Pimsleur LAB), working memory (AWMA), and listening anxiety (FLLAS) and, where necessary, translated to Japanese and are ready for collecting data in June and July, 2017.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the Spring semester, the data collection will begin for the six L2 variables identified - L2 listening (IELTS and TOEIC), L2 vocabulary (LVLT), metacognition of listening (MALQ), audio discrimination ability (Pimsleur LAB), working memory (AWMA), and listening anxiety (FLLAS). This data will be collected from classes of 2nd-year tertiary students in six sessions. With this data, initial correlations will be established between the six L2 variables using data analysis software and presented at a yet to be identified international conference in the second half of 2017.
|
Causes of Carryover |
To buy data analysis software. attend an international conference in the second half of the year. In addition, to pay approximately sixty participants for taking part in the data collection over six sessions.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
Between October, 2017 and April, 2018, attend an international conference - 200,000 yen. To pay research participants in June, July 2017 - 60,000 yen Data analysis software purchase - 40,000 yen
