Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research mainly concentrated on the historical facts that the Chinese interpreters(Totsuji) had done a lot of contributions to English studies and Western book translations during the late Edo Period.
During this four years, we have researched some libraries in Japan and abroad, which hold some rare books concerning Totsuji's activities. After analyzing all these materials, we have made a lot of presentations in the World Scholarly Association for the History of Chinese Language Teaching and some international symposiums, and published some papers on scholarly books and journals. Meanwhile, through the public lectures and internet, we tried to deliver and open our research results to Japanese society.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は、幕末維新期で活躍していた唐通事,特に何礼之（1840－1923）の英語学習と西書翻訳に焦点をあてた。これらの翻訳書を言語的に分析し、幕末明治期の政治、法律、経済における漢字翻訳語の創出と確立の過程、つまり日本語が西洋概念を受容した際の唐通事の貢献を見いだせる。
さらに、唐通事の英語学習と西書翻訳に関する史料を整理、考察が実現したことによって、近代西洋文化の受容の諸相に関する東西文化交流史、近代語彙史、英学史、翻訳史などの研究領域に対しても有意義な書誌情報を提供できるのみならず、一般社会にも日本の近代化における唐通事の貢献と役割を再認識することができる。
