| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1899年から1939年の土地改良事業の展開過程を示す富山県・石川県におけるデータベースを作成し、それをもとに日本の農業発展を、ヨーロッパ地域と比較する研究をおこなった。その主な成果は以下の２つである。
1. 日本農業の特徴である「零細分散錯圃」に、土地改良事業が与えた影響を分析し、ヨーロッパの研究と比較した。研究成果の一部は、Junichi Kanzaka "The scattered and intermingled field system of Japan compared to the open-field systems of Europe" in C. Dyer, E. Thoen, T. Williamson (eds.), Peasants and their fields: The rationale of open-field agriculture, c. 700-1800, Turnhout: Brepols, 2018 として公刊された。これは、零細分散錯圃をヨーロッパの開放耕地制度と比較した、初めての英文論文である。
2. 土地改良事業で農業技術が普及したが、農民の技術力の差によって、土地市場が貧困削減に果たした役割に差が生じることを考察した。その成果の一部は、イタリア・ボローニャで11月に開催された Trend in inequality: social, economic and political issuesにて、Did land rental market reduce poverty in interwar Japan?の論題にて報告さられた。
3．20世紀初頭の土地改良事業を江戸時代から連続した土地改良事業のなかで位置づけ、1910年代に国家資金が本格的に投入される前後の土地改良事業の性格の変化を考察した。その成果の一部は、The Development of Civil Engineering Projects and Village Communities in Seventeenth to Nineteenth century Japanとしてまとめられた。同論文は、現在刊行のための審査中である。
