Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the third and final year of this research project, the focus has been on writing research and giving presentations to share the outcomes of the work. To summarize, in the first two years of the project, applications and implementations of mobile augmented reality (AR) were created and deployed to better understand the technology’s affordances to tourism contexts. Several academic papers were written on the overall outcomes from creating those digital platforms and testing them with users. Through this process the software and the strategies for using AR for tourism were revisited and revised. Most notable accomplishments are related to ways AR can be created and deployed by non-technical groups of people such as tourist attraction developers and promoters. The knowledge was shared at several conferences and workshops both in Japan and around the world. The work has attracted a host of other researchers to collect to continue research in this area, and a new research association has been born in part to the work related to this project. It is clear there is much more work to be done in immersive tourism research, and this work has contributed to this exciting young field. Other research is still expected to be written and found on the largest test case of this project called the ‘Fukuchiyama AR Rally’ where over 200 participants explored and learned about Fukuchiyama using an AR enhanced ‘game-like’ tourism tour experience.

Remarks |
I believe research should be shared in as many ways as possible, that is why I post my work on YouTube, blog sites, and regularly appear on radio and podcasts.
