Outline of Final Research Achievements

The problems of declining birthrate and aging population mostly affect regions other than large cities such as Tokyo. This study considers the sustainability of medium-sized cities.
The analyses are based on theoretical (urban and spatial economic), empirical (including questionnaire survey), and behavioral economic backgrounds.
Theoretical and empirical results indicate each city needs to attract (or keep) appropriate industries taking its location and size into account. Also, by behavioral economic analysis, it is argued that overpopulation can be caused by imperfect expectation of the people.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
