Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The goal of the project for the whole 3 year duration was to design an efficient 802.11 MAC hardware for IEEE 802.11ax Wireless LAN. Being a very broad topic, we specialized our design on UL OFDMA random access which is a new feature introduced in 802.11ax to improve the users' Wireless LAN experience in very user dense environments by allowing them to transmit at the same time at certain time intervals. We presented proposals for maximizing the efficiency of this feature both in domestic and international conferences. In addition, one of our contribution regarding UL OFDMA random access was subsequently accepted by the IEEE task group ax to be included in the next generation standard.
For the first 2 years (2015,2017), we developed a method for analyzing UL OFDMA random access which is necessary to optimize the MAC protocol feature. This method was then used to propose an algorithm that tunes the MAC parameters to obtain high MAC efficiency. During this period, we also designed an FPGA testbed to be used to perform online experiment using the UL OFDMA feature in real environments. In the third year, we further developed our FPGA testbed and was able to perform experiments online with single user case. Further refinements of the testbed is still necessary to implement the multiuser case and be able to publish the obtained experimental results in reputable journals. Having the current FPGA testbed for 802.11ax however opens up a lot of research possibilities that we can pursue in the future(e.g. spatial reuse, WIFI-5G coexistence).
