Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The first series of experiments consisted in 1) installing low-sensitivity accelerometers (Hitachi H30CD, Japan) on the floor of the OchaHouse in order to measure people activity-related floor vibration, and 2) designing and testing a suitable algorithmic method able to process signals from several floor accelerometers (N=7) and count the number of steps. The floor vibration system could predict the actual number of steps with a -2±1 mistake. The second series of experiments consisted in 1) installing high sensitivity accelerometers (Rion PV-87, Japan) to reduce the number of sensors, 2) testing different signal processing methods to estimate the number of steps. During some preliminary trials, it was established that one sensor installed at the most southern point of the house was able to detect vibrations produced by steps performed at the most northern point of the house (distance: 10m). Two sensors were installed to cover the whole surface of the house (50m2). Subjects performed a multi-directional 42-step walk through the whole house, and step-count was estimated using floor vibration and a waist-worn monitor (OMRON, Japan). The latter counted 41±1 steps, while floor accelerometers detected 41±4 steps. Finally, 5 adults were asked to complete a 10-min free-living experiment and step-counts estimated by the floor vibration system and waist-worn monitor were compared. These two systems respectively counted 84±18 and 149±24 steps but the waist-worn monitor has been found to underestimate the actual number of steps.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
1) No graduate students have been working on the project during the last year. 2) Conflict with duties at the Leading Graduate School Promotion Center.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The addition of 1 to 2 sensors is currently under consideration. Indeed, one major challenge is also to reduce the influence of external noises, and having a strong step-related signal will help the signal processing job. Then, the project will consist in repeating the same kind of experiments with this new hardware system. If successful, longer free living experiments will be planned.

Causes of Carryover |
We have been awarded with a one year private grant (精密測定技術振興財団) for the same project. We prioritised the usage of the latter during the 2015 fiscal year, especially for the purchase of new articles/equipment..
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
The incurring amount might be used to cover the acquisition (or maintenance) of equipment, personnel expenditure and remuneration, or travel expenses.
