グローバルな気候変動、とくに第四紀以降の気候変動について重要な役割を果たしている、地球内部のサブシステム間の相互作用について、氷床を含めた雪氷圏の果たしている役割は大きい。特に南極氷床はそれ自体が全球の海面変動を６０m以上上昇させうる規模の淡水を溜め込んでいることもあり、その変動がもたらすグローバルな影響は小さくない。このプロジェクトでは、アメリカ及びオーストラリアの、当該分野で最先端の研究を行っている研究室との共同研究を遂行することを主な目的としている。本年度はオーストラリアの共同研究者が、別予算で来日することになったため、日本での共同研究遂行を進めるとともに、研究員の雇用を行い、研究試料の効率的な分析を中心に研究を行った。アメリカの研究者とは、学会や研究会等で時間を取り、研究の進展や今後の方針についての細かい打ち合わせを行うとともに、次年度の初めにライス大学とスタンフォード大学を訪問し、進捗状況の確認とデータの検討、論文執筆の具体的な検討項目の抽出を行うことを確認した。

学内での業務などがあったため、国内での研究をメインに行うことになったが、研究試料の分析を飛躍的に進めることができたため、順調に研究プロジェクトを推進できていると言える。

今後、来年度は再びオーストラリアとアメリカに渡航し、同位体分析を進めることや南極の分析試料の検討と議論などを進めながら、共著論文の取りまとめ作業を進め、随時発表していく。
