Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Preliminary fieldwork was conducted in East Timor and Singapore from August 2 to 23, 2016. During this period, library and ethnographic data was collected, which will contribute to developing the project objectives and goals. I also shared my preliminary research findings with the academic community through a public seminar on 9 June at Kyoto University, and June 22 to 23 at the Philippine Studies conference of Japan held at Kagoshima University.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Fieldwork data was collected in East TImor with the assistance of colleagues from Sophia University and Osaka University who helped with the logistic arrangements in Dili. I also received some good feedback from my presentations at Kyoto University and Kagoshima University.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the following fiscal year, I will conduct a synthesis of the ethnographic and archival data that was collected form fieldwork in Dili in August 2016. I shall also combine this with feedback that I will receive from scholarly colleagues when I present part of my findings in academic two major international conferences in 2017. (namely 1. International Convention of Asian Scholars, Chiang Mai, July 2017, and 2. the Consortium for SOutheast Asian Studies in Asia conference, Bangkok, December 2017.)
