Research Abstract

H21年度は、J-PARC中性子源のパワーは20kW(J-PARC目標パワーの1/50)であったが、四季の試験運転を始めた。これにより、バックグラウンド低減のための遮蔽の増強。チョッパーの位相回転テスト、検出器、データ集積系のテスト。データ集積ソフト、解析ソフトの試験と改良を行った。11月より、パワーが100kW(最終目標の1/10)に達し、本研究の第一の目標であった「四季」分光器の性能が同種の装置で世界トップレベルであることを確認した。しかしながら、H22年2月から5月まで、中性子源のトラブルで中性子ビームが出ないこととなった。一方、100kWの段階でかなりの成果が出せる見通しが確認できたので、より優れた成果を出すことと、本研究のまとめとして国際研究集会を開催することを意図し、研究期間をH22年度まで一年間延伸した。H22年度の研究予算のほとんどは、国際会議開催に集中するため、予算分担者はなくなったが、研究は旧来のメンバーで進めた。10月に、ようやく施設が安定的に稼働し、12月にはビームパワーが200kWに達した。これは、J-PARCの最終目標の1/5であるものの、「四季」の高性能さにより、内外の研究者の協力の下、多くの優れた実験研究、これまで国内では実施が困難であった実験研究を大いに進めることができた。そして、H23年2月下旬に開催した国際研究集会では、当該分野の第一級の研究者約100名(海外30名程度)の参加のもと、「四季」の成果発表を行い、研究会を成功させた。現在会議の論文集の編纂を進めている(日本物理学会英文誌)。残念なことに、3月11日の東日本大震災で施設が大きな被害を受け、研究は中断しているが、その復旧後には確実にこれまでにない優れた研究成果を創出することが大いに期待できる状況である。
