Outline of Annual Research Achievements

近代農業は、主として外部からのエネルギー投入(化学肥料や農業機械)によって、多収と経済性を第一義的に目指して推進されてきた。その結果食糧生産は確かにめざましく増大したが、同時に土壌侵食や土壌有機物減耗といった土地劣化に起因する「農業生産の持続性の危機」、あるいは硝酸汚染の増大や炭酸ガス放出を通した気候変動への影響など「農業起源の環境問題」が急速に顕在化した。本研究では、これらの問題を回避・解決するための基本的考え方として「ミニマム・ロスの農業」を構想した。
本研究では、近代農業の諸問題を克服するために、「ミニマム・ロスの農業」を構築する。ミニマム・ロスとは、1)下層土からの溶存成分の流出、2)土壌表層からのガス成分としての放出、3)土壌侵食を通した土壌粒子・有機物の物理的除去、を最小にすることである。具体的には、生態学や地域研究(農耕技術論)の手法を大胆に取り込んだ上で、ミニマム・ロスの文脈で規範となり得る自然生態系、および比較的長期間にわたって持続性を担保されてきた伝統的農耕における生態学的・農耕技術的プロセスを広く探索・解明し、これらを近代農業の文脈で適用可能な技術要素として再構築した上で提示する。
世界各地の自然生態系および在来農法における物質動態を詳細に解析した結果、農耕地からの窒素等の資源流亡を抑制するためには、気候・土壌条件に合致した適切な有機資源の利用が重要であることが明らかとなった。土壌への有機炭素の投入は、直接的にはこれが有機・無機複合体として土壌中に窒素・リン等の資源を集積するとともに、間接的には物理的・化学的・生物的反応を通してこれら資源の土壌中への一時的貯留を促進する。鉱物学的特性、化学性、微生物特性を含めた土壌特性を認識した上で、サイトスペシフィックな肥培管理法を開発することが必要である。
