Outline of Final Research Achievements

We used animal(mouse) model that mimics the periodontitis to investigate whether anti-inflammatory medicine(IKK inhibitor) influences bone resorption around a tooth resulted from periodontitis. As a result, we found that Ikk inhibitor could suppress the bone resorption significantly. Additionally we found less osteoclast(bone absorbing cells) in test group.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

歯周病は慢性炎症性疾患として知られている。一般には40歳を超えたあたりから口腔内に所見が見られ、骨吸収が進むようになる。また、一部は若くして歯槽骨吸収が起こり、20歳代で歯が揺れ出すこともある。これは遺伝的な要素が関連していると考えられている。
Ikk阻害薬は副作用がとても少なく、すでに臨床応用されている比較的安全な薬剤である。これを一定の年齢や、遺伝的に歯周炎リスクが高い人に低容量投与を行うことで、歯周病による骨吸収の抑制ができるのではないかと考えられる。
これまで予防は口腔衛生指導が中心であったが、新たな予防の糸口となる可能性がある。
