Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Preparation phase was completed on time. Software purchase is delayed due to lack of funds. Development and pretesting of the survey instrument was completed successfully. Based on the guidance provided by the Yokohama port bureau, data collection approach was modified. Since the port did not allow distribution of leaflets to passengers, on-site survey methods were adopted using paper-based questionnaires. Designing of the website was postponed due to limited funds. Interpretation of the preliminary results and the revision phase was completed. Data collection commenced based on the schedule developed in the previous phase. Due to limited funds, to better use the available resources and logistical limitations, transition was made to a web-based questionnaire.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Data collection is on schedule to be completed in 2018. Cooperation from the port bureaus is less than initially anticipated, consequently more resources need to be dedicated for the interviews. As a result, resources originally anticipated will not be sufficient to complete data collection. It is necessary to transfer funds from the last year of the grant period to the current year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The data collection will continue based on the schedule developed. Analysis of the data gathered will commence in January 2019.

Causes of Carryover

The need for surveys to collect data is greater in the second year hence funds were transferred to second year to meet that need.
