Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
On October 6, 2018, a discussion forum took place at Osaka University where the results of the pilot study was discussed and a consensus was made that motivating students was very important in globalizing dentistry and the board exams. One guest participant, a Japan-trained dentist, from Case Western Reserve University, gave a talk about the importance of English for future Japanese dentists, based on his own experience in dentistry and psychology. Twenty nine representatives from dental schools were supposed to attend the forum but due to a typhoon, seven participants cancelled. Nevertheless, the meeting had a very positive feedback from the participants themselves that they are already looking forward to the next meeting and to have a permanent working group for dental English education.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Enthusiasm and full cooperation of the participants were two of the main reasons why the program was and is successful. Most of the participants in the current grant were former participants of my previous grant. I believe we all see the importance of continuing to achieve the goal we presented at the beginning... to see a globally-competitive Japanese dentist.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In spite of the enthusiasm and eagerness of the participants to have a 2nd meeting, the funding alloted is not enough from what was originally applied for. Therefore, it is apparent that there will be no 2nd meeting. Instead, I will publish a paper based on our initial survey results with the results of the consensus. I will also use remaining funding to purchase dental educational software and learning materials. For the coming years, I would like to procure a grant with a much bigger funding to ensure the continuity of the proposal. If not, all of our efforts will go to waste and Japanese dentists will be left out.
|
Causes of Carryover |
It will be used for the documentation and publication of the results of our discussion forum in 2018. The paper will be published in the same journal as that of previous grant, which published the first report.
