Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The success of the discussion forum that took place at Osaka University in October 2018 led to the formulation of a concensus on globalizing dentistry in Japan and motivating students to be a global dentist, even if these students plan to practice in Japan. The representatives of dental schools around Japan agreed that there is also a need to standardize the Japanese national licensure examinations with those of international schools. The representatives also decided to pursue a plan to organize a discussion forum on an annual basis to discuss programs to globalize dentistry. After the first meeting, a research paper about our efforts was published in BMC Medical Education in July 2019. The paper is entitled "The implementation of the Japanese Dental English core curriculum: active learning based on peer-teaching and learning activities". In January 2020, part of the results of the grant, specifically, the Dental English course and its active learning activities, was presented at the International Academic Forum on Education Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The slight delay was primarily due to insufficient funding. Since the current grant primarily covers travel and accommodation expenses of representatives of Japan's 29 dental schools during meetings, adequate funding is essential. In my previous grant, full funding was approved and therefore, we were able to organize two discussion forums. In the current grant, funding was not fully approved so when I started to organize the 2nd meeting, I realized that the remaining funds would not be enough and eventually decided to forego of the 2nd meeting and instead focus on the journal publication and presentation of results at an international meeting. Another reason for the delay was the COVID-19 pandemic.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the current year, I am planning to further disseminate the results of our 1st meeting and the Global Dentist Initiative through national, and if possible, international conferences. To further initiate awareness of the need to globalize dental education within Japan, I will be presenting the results of the grant at the International Academic Forum in Osaka, in August 2020. For the coming years, I would like to continue the initiative using the results of the current proposal and the pilot study of dental students and licensure examination from different countries.

Causes of Carryover |
We have decided to present the results of the 1st meeting in national and international meetings to instill awareness in Japan and other countries.
