Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2018, which was the second year of the three-year project, the researcher, along with a research collaborator, continued conducting in-depth interviews with young people who were participating in the working holiday programme between Japan and South Korea. After the interviews were completed in the first half of FY2018, the researcher analysed the qualitative data to extend the current understanding of the youth travel market and explore types of hazards the youth experienced during their overseas stays. The researcher also conducted field work in Australia, one of the largest working holiday destinations among young Japanese, and held discussions with current working holiday makers, tourism practitioners and tourism academics. Continuing from the previous year, extensive reviews of related literature were also carried out during FY2018. These activities helped the researcher gain further knowledge of the research topic and refine the study’s conceptual framework to develop a questionnaire, which will be used for large-scale online data collection in FY2019. Arrangements for conducting quantitative data collection were made in late FY2018. During FY2018, two oral presentations were given at academic conferences, including one international conference, to disseminate the study findings and receive feedback from the academic community, and one research paper was submitted to an international journal for review.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
As with the previous year, the project has been on track and conducted without serious obstacles. The researcher expects to continue research activities in FY2019 without major revisions of the research focus and plan. As described in the previous year’s activity report, the project’s geographical focus was expanded from the original plan in FY2017. This amendment has led to minor revisions in the original research plan. However, this expansion gave the researcher further knowledge about the topic. As described above, findings from the project were presented at academic conferences in FY2018, and one research paper was submitted to an international journal. These activities demonstrate that the project has been on track and that further research outputs are expected.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In FY2019, which is the final year of the three-year project, the researcher will first develop a questionnaire for collecting quantitative data from former working holiday programme participants. During this process, the researcher will seek advice from international research collaborators. After finalising the instrument, a large scale online survey will be conducted through contacting potential participants on a consumer panel. The researcher will then analyse the collected data. Additionally, the researcher will develop a paper based on the research activities from the previous two years for submission to an international journal. Findings from the FY2019 data collection are also expected to be presented at an academic conference and then submitted to international journals to contribute to both the academic community and tourism practitioners.

Causes of Carryover |
For several reasons, some of the allocated funds for FY2018 were not used and were brought forward to the 2019 fiscal year. One major reason was that the researcher was unable to attend an international conference, which he had planned to attend, due to his unexpected unavailability caused by other duties in his home institution. Additionally, costs of domestic and overseas field work, as well as data collection costs, were lower than estimated. The funds allocated for FY2019, together with the remaining FY2018 funds, will be used for costs related to data collection and analysis, field work in Japan and overseas and other activities for disseminating the study findings and enhancing the research project.
