Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY2019, the final year of the three-year project, the researcher first attempted to develop a research instrument to conduct a large-scale online survey with former Japanese participants in the Australian working holiday programme. The survey’s purpose was to increase the understanding of their travel experience, especially travel-related hazards encountered during overseas stays. To develop the instrument, the researcher conducted fieldwork in Australia and held discussions with tourism practitioners and tourism academics. Work on reviews of related literature that begun earlier in the project also continued. Before finalising the instrument, the researcher conducted a small-scale online survey with former working holiday participants, which helped to refine the survey and provide further information on the research topic. After these activities, the researcher conducted a large-scale online survey by contacting potential participants on a consumer panel, and more than 600 people participated in the study. Research activities conducted during this three-year project have extended the understanding of Japanese youth travellers’ experiences, including participants in overseas working holiday programmes. Specifically, the project has encouraged academic discussion about their safety issues, a topic that previous studies had not thoroughly investigated. During FY2019, presentations were given at two international academic conferences to disseminate the study findings.
