Outline of Final Research Achievements

The results of this research project on the history of Japanese visual culture were reported at the international symposium “Reconsidering Japanese Screen Practices: Utsushie, Nishikikagae, and Magic Lantern in the History of Visual Culture,” which was planned and sponsored by the project; the results were also reported at other academic societies and study groups, both in Japan and overseas. As for the new methodology of visual media research, I co-edited “Screen Studies: Visual and Media Experience in the Digital Age” (University of Tokyo Press, 2019), and further developed this viewpoint in my forthcoming books. In the previous fiscal year, this project organized an exhibition to present the results of new methodology and historical research on visual culture, as well as research investigating the construction of visual “fact” occurring with the development of modern visual technology, in order to publicize such research results among a wider audience.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究課題では、映像技術の変化に伴い、報道における「事実」「現実感」が変化してきたことを歴史的に明らかにした。このことは、VR/ARやデジタル化された様々な映像技術に導入され、「ポスト真実」とも呼ばれる状況を迎えている現代の視覚報道の状況を、歴史を踏まえて一貫した視点から分析することを可能にするという意義を持つ。加えて本研究課題では、メディア考古学と映像文化の社会学の視点を発展させ、スクリーン・スタディーズという新しい映像研究の方法を提案した。このことは報道やジャーナリズムの分析にとどまらず、映像研究や視覚社会学の領域の発展に寄与するという意義を持つ。
