タイ熱帯季節林の常緑樹林と落葉樹林において、樹木や森林の持つ機能の季節・年変化と立地条件との違いを測定することによる、植物・土壌・気象要因の相互作用を明らかにし、東南アジアの熱帯季節林の生態系の構造と機能を総合的に理解する。
