Outline of Final Research Achievements	A comparison of rice production costs in Japan, Italy, and the US shows that the total cost of rice produced in Japan is in the \110/kg range, while that in Italy and the United States is in the \50/kg range. Five technologies (dry direct sowing, wet direct sowing, general-purpose combine harvesters, clear fields, gentle slopes) contribute to strengthen competitiveness. A survey of Japanese business owners (n = 73) revealed that dry direct sowing and general-purpose combine harvesters are highly likely to be introduced, but clear field and gentle slope technology in the US is low. It was estimated that the amount of ordinary rice produced in the US would arrive at Japanese ports at $0.9/kg. On the other hand, in the case of organic rice, the yield of Japanese rice was about twice that of Italian rice. The advantage in Japan is to transplant and to do manual weeding. In the case of exporting pesticide-free rice to the West Coast of the US from Japan, it is possible to survive locally.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements	本研究は日本産のコメの国際競争力強化の手段を、事例から具体的に示した。生産では実際の経営同士で比較を行い、日本の費用が嵩まる点を欧米で克服した技術のうち生産者は、乾田直播と汎用コンバインが比較的受け入れやすい。次に流通費用の構成要素を明らかにして、一般のコメをアメリカから日本に入る場合の費用の構成要素と、有機米での補助金なくアメリカに輸出する場合の費用の構成要素を示した。今後は米国から輸出される米が到着する際にどう日本での生産・流通費用を抑えるべきかに課題が移る。また日本産の有機米輸出の現実的条件が示される。日本人に重要なコメについて、今後の技術開発戦略を示す上で意義がある成果と考えられる。
