Outline of Final Research Achievements

Maternal Ovo protein have been shown to regulating germ-cell specific gene expression in Drosophila. However, the role of maternal Ovo protein during germ cell differentiation remains unclear, since the maternal Ovo protein knockdown induces germline loss phenotype during larval stage in both sexes. Therefore, in this study, we identified and analyzed the genes whose transcription is activated by maternal Ovo protein.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究で着目したovo遺伝子は、ショウジョウバエだけでなく、系統的に遠い関係にあるマウスにおいてもそのオルソログ(ovol2遺伝子)が生殖細胞の形成に必要であることが明らかになっている。よって、本研究で明らかになった知見は、ショウジョウバエだけでなく、マウスを含む多くの動物種において共通した生殖細胞形成機構を見出せる可能性を有している。
