Outline of Final Research Achievements

Promoting patient participation is one of the activities of quality improvement in patient-centered care. This study examined the concept of patient participation in medical care and clarified its characteristics, such as communication to understand patients' needs. It was found that promoting patient participation requires improving patients' health literacy and organizational efforts by medical facilities. These findings are useful from the perspective of evaluating the relationship between medical professionals and patients.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

患者参加の推進は重要な課題であると認識されているが学術的知見が少なかった。本研究では、患者及び医療従事者双方の視点から患者参加が意味することやその重要性を示し、かつその実態と促進・阻害要因についても検討したことは新たな知見である。本研究で得られた知見は、医療者-患者関係の評価や改善に活用することができ、今後、患者参加の推進のために必要とされる取り組みについても提示することができた。これらの点で社会的意義があるといえる。
