Outline of Final Research Achievements

We investigated the relationship between sarcopenia and dysphagia in patient with acute stroke. Temporal muscle thickness measured by MRI was detected as significant explanator of dysphagia severity following stroke.
We also investigated the changes of tongue thickness and temporal muscle thickness after the on set of stroke. These atrophy progressed 2 weeks after the onset of stroke. The result suggested that stroke-related sarcopenia may occur in mastication and swallowing muscles.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究において、脳卒中発症後の摂食嚥下障害にサルコペニアが強く関与していることが明らかになった。脳卒中後の摂食嚥下リハビリテーションにおいて、従来の神経学的なアプローチに加えて、廃用の予防や低栄養の予防を目的とした早期からの介入が重要であることが示唆された。
