Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, cultural ecosystem services were objectively and quantitatively measured using methods from natural sciences. This contributes to the understanding and enhancement of human well-being, as well as serving as an important theoretical basis for nature conservation. A distinctive feature of this study is the design and implementation of measurements using the latest IT devices to objectively and quantitatively measure human psychological changes. Additionally, we achieved the automatic estimation of cultural ecosystem services on a large scale using big data and artificial intelligence. Furthermore, we conducted a literature review on cultural ecosystem services and presented the results of this study in the form of publications and exhibitions of visual arts.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

国際連合が主導した「ミレニアム生態系評価」では、自然の恵みを明確に定義するため「生態系サービス」という概念が提唱された。生態系サービスのなかで、食料や建築材の供給・水の浄化などは比較的容易に定量化できる。ところが、文化的生態系サービスの定量化は進まず、理解は漠然としたものにとどまっている。文化的サービスの側面から政策や経済活動・環境保全活動を評価する研究は少数存在するが、根拠となるデータ取得が困難だという根本的な問題が指摘されている。このような状況下で、本研究は情報技術デバイスや人工知能などの自然科学的手法を用いることで、文化的生態系サービスを定量的に評価できることを実証した。
