Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we surveyed high school students in Japan regarding their future career plans and academic and life prospects. We investigated the reasons behind the low female enrollment in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields in Japan. Our analysis reveals the mindset of high school students and the younger generation overall, highlighting gender differences in their career pursuits from an early age. Based on our findings, we provide evidence-based policy recommendations to effectively increase women's representation in STEM fields in Japan.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

高校生とその保護者を対象にしたアンケートの結果、高校１年生の段階において、理工系分野への進学を考える女子生徒は、男子生徒に比べて著しく少なかった。理工系分野における女性の活躍を推進するためには、若年時の意思決定が本人の長期的なキャリアに大きく影響するため、そうした早い段階からの、若い人々や保護者への教育や啓蒙活動を強化することが不可欠であることが明らかになった。
