Outline of Annual Research Achievements

氷形成能力を有するエアロゾル粒子（氷晶核粒子：Ice Nucleating Particles）の存在は、極微量であっても、地球の気候や生態系に多大な影響を及ぼす。北極域の下層大気（数百メートル～数キロメートルの高度）では、年間を通して混相雲（過冷却の雲滴と氷晶が混在する雲）が頻繁に発生している。北極域混相雲内での氷形成過程には、氷晶核粒子の存在が必要であるが、北極域の大気中における氷晶核粒子の濃度は、非常に低く、その変動も比較的小さいと考えられていた。しかし、スヴァールバル諸島・ニーオルスンにて数回実施してきた短期での集中観測からは、夏季に氷晶核粒子の濃度が大幅に増加していることが示唆された（Tobo et al., 2019, Nat. Geosci.）。そこで本研究では、夏季の高緯度域で発生する氷河起源ダスト（氷河堆積物から大気中へと飛散したダスト）の影響に着目し、スヴァールバル諸島における大気中での氷晶核粒子およびダスト粒子の時間・空間変動を通年観測によって明らかにしていくことを計画している。初年度にあたる2019年度は、スヴァールバル諸島・ニーオルスンを計3回（2019年7～8月、2019年11月、2020年3月）訪問し、Zeppelin山観測所（海抜約474メートル地点）とGruvebadet観測所（Zeppelin山のふもとにある氷河起源ダストの発生源により近い観測所）に自動エアロゾルサンプラーを設置・運用することにより、エアロゾル試料のサンプリングを連続的に行った。その他にも、多段式インパクターを用いたエアロゾル粒子や雲残渣粒子の粒径別のサンプリングなどを実施した。

Reason

スヴァールバル諸島のZeppelin山観測所およびGruvebadet観測所でのエアロゾル試料のサンプリングに関しては、新型コロナ問題の影響もあって、2020年3月に予定していた一部の観測計画の変更やキャンセルをすることになったが、おおむね当初の計画通りに進めることができた。自動エアロゾルサンプラーについては、年間を通してトラブルもなく継続して運用することができた。2019～2020年度は、スヴァールバル諸島にある複数の氷河（ニーオルスンやロングイヤービン付近の氷河）下流の複数の地点から氷河堆積物を採取することを計画しているが、夏季（2019年7～8月）の現地滞在中は、日程面と安全面での懸念事項（悪天候、シロクマの出現等）もあったことから、2019年度の実施については見送った。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

2019年度にスヴァールバル諸島のZeppelin山観測所およびGruvebadet観測所から持ち帰ったエアロゾル試料の分析を順次進めることにより、大気中における氷晶核粒子やダスト粒子の季節変動などについて明らかにしていく。また、新型コロナ問題の収束状況などを見極める必要があるが、現地に設置してある自動エアロゾルサンプラーや粒子計測器の定期メンテナンスやエアロゾル試料の回収などを行うために、スヴァールバル諸島を数回訪問する予定である。その一方で、年度内の現地入りが難しい場合も想定し、スヴァールバル諸島・ニーオルスンに常駐しているノルウェー極地研の技術スタッフらとも情報・意見交換をしながら、どのように現地での観測活動を進めていくかを検討していく。
