| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Comprehensive analyses using various cohorts in Japan, including the Tohoku Medical Megabank, the Japanese Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES), and the Longevity Improvement and Fair Evidence Study (LIFE), have elucidated the relationship between oral conditions and systemic diseases. The findings revealed that poor oral health increases the risk of dementia by 10-20%, influences weight loss or gain, and that tooth loss due to weight reduction elevates the risk of mortality. Furthermore, the number of teeth was found to be the highest risk factor for mortality, particularly among men.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
これまで口腔の状況と全身疾患の関係が指摘されてきた。特に口腔と糖尿病の相互関係や認知機能障害との関係が疫学調査で明らかになってきたが、この研究でより大規模で様々なコホート研究を実施することで、より口腔と全身疾患との関係が明らかになった。特に男性では口腔の状況が修正可能な因子のなかで死亡に影響する可能性が非常に高いことや認知機能低下や死亡のリスクを起こすメカニズムについてより迫ることが出来た。一部のデータの入手時期の問題から遺伝情報についての解析はまだ途中であるが、メタボローム解析などを実施した結果も出てきており、今後更により詳細なメカニズムに迫ることが可能となろう。
