Outline of Annual Research Achievements

アメリカ・ブルックヘブン国立研究所の相対論的重イオン加速器RHICを用いた衝突ビームエネルギー走査実験を推進し、宇宙初期から中性子内部に渡る高温・高密度のクォーク・核物質のQCD相構造を調査するために、実験的研究を行ってきた。これまでに行ってきた衝突実験データの解析を行うことにより、特に正味の陽子数分布の高次形状を用いた保存量揺らぎと1次の指向的集団運動の衝突エネルギー依存性の測定において、QCD臨界点および1次相転移の兆候と思われる信号を観測した。
これらの測定の精査を行うとともに最終結果を導くための物理解析を行い、2019年度から本格的に第2期衝突ビームエネルギー走査実験を開始し、本測定のために準備してきた反応平面検出器、インナーTPC検出器、エンドキャップ飛行時間測定器による前方領域へ測定立体角の拡大を実現した。衝突型加速器によってこれまでと同様に衝突実験モードでの測定を、特に重心系核子対あたり20GeV領域以下で行い、さらにビームパイプの中に設置した固定標的と片側のビーム原子核による衝突実験モードを実施し、さらに低い重心系衝突エネルギーでの測定・データ収集実験を行った。
上述の新たに導入した検出器や測定モードによる実験的測定・データ較正・物理データ解析を行い、物理結果を出す準備を行った。特に、保存量の高次揺らぎを測定するための多粒子同時測定時の検出器効率に関する補正の技術的な問題を解決するための手法の開発を行った。したがって、今後の衝突実験データ収集と物理解析を進めるための基盤ができた。

Reason

保存量のゆらぎと多粒子相関の物理解析によるQCD臨界点と1次相転移の実験的探索研究を予定通り推進する事ができた。特に検出器の立体角を増強を完了し、第2期衝突ビームエネルギー走査実験を開始し、これまでに本計画研究の全期間に予定していた約半分程度の実験期間分に相当する衝突実験データ収集を完了した。
2019年度の後半から始めた2回目の測定の途中で、コロナウイルスCOVID-19のためニューヨーク州に緊急事態宣言が発令され予期せぬ実験の中断となったが、今後数年間の実験計画により予定している実験の遂行が可能になると期待できる。
これらの衝突実験データ収集と共に、これまでに収集してきた衝突実験データを用いた保存量のゆらぎと多粒子相関に関する物理解析やそのための準備は予定通り進んでおり、検出器による測定の補正に関する技術的な問題を解決するための物理解析手法の開発などを行い、臨界点や1次相転移の探索を進めるための研究を推進できた。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

これまでにBNL研究所のRHIC加速器を用いて行ってきた衝突ビームエネルギー走査実験によって得られた実験データを用いて、クォーク・核物質のQCD相図上にあると期待される臨界点や1次相転移を探索するための物理解析を行い、また第2期ビームエネルギー走査実験における衝突データ収集実験を行う。
これまでに蓄積してきた知識・技術を用いて、保存量のゆらぎと多粒子相関による集団的運動に関する物理解析を推進し、第1期ビームエネルギー走査実験による最終物理結果をまとめると共に、特に前方領域に拡張した粒子検出領域を含めた第2期走査実験からの高統計の実験データの解析準備・補正を進める。検出器効率の補正に関する技術的な問題を解決するための新たな物理データ解析手法を試みる。揺らぎの物理においては分布を再構成する手法を、保存量分布および温度分布の高次揺らぎ測定に適応する。新たに導入した前方領域の検出器を含めて、広い運動学的領域で指向的方位角異方性を持った集団運動の様子を多粒子相関の手法を用いて測定し、衝突系の流体的膨張や時空発展を観測する。核子対あたりの重心系の衝突エネルギー20GeV領域は臨界点及び1次相転移に最も近い可能性があるため、先ずはその領域において収集した高統計のデータに注目した実験データ解析を推進する。また、固定標的衝突モードにより収集した実験データを用いて、将来的に、より高密度領域で行う研究のための準備的研究を進める。
これらの測定により高い統計的精度に加えて、実験的測定やデータ解析手法から来る系統的精度を改善して、特に高密度領域におけるクォーク・核物質のQCD相図の新たな構造を探索する。
