Outline of Annual Research Achievements

アメリカ・ブルックヘブン国立研究所(BNL)の相対論的重イオン加速器(RHIC)を用いたビーム・エネルギー走査実験を遂行し、クォーク・核物質のQCD相図を調べる研究を行なった。相図上の高密度領域(中性子星内部に相当するクォーク・グルーオン・プラズマ相の状態)では相境界が不連続になる1次相転移であり、その終点として臨界点が存在すること、また高温領域(宇宙初期に相当するクォーク・グルーオン・プラズマ相の状態)では相境界が滑らかなクロスオーバー相転移となることが理論的には予測されるが、実験的には未だ確認されていない。そのためRHIC加速器を用いてビーム・エネルギー走査を行い原子核ビームの衝突エネルギーを下げることにより、高温領域から高密度領域への衝突系の状態の変化、つまりQCD相構造の変化を探る測定を行った。STAR国際共同実験グループにおいて、重心系衝突エネルギーが7GeV以上の領域は衝突実験モードにより、7GeV以下の領域は固定標的実験モードにより金原子核同士の衝突実験を行い、1次相転移や臨界点に感度があると期待される観測量(集団運動、渦流、方位角異方性、多粒子相関、保存量ゆらぎなど)に注目した研究を推進した。特に固定標的実験モードによる低いエネルギー領域における測定では、高いエネルギー領域で観測してきたクォーク相とは明らかに異なる結果を表すハドロン相の兆しを観測し、臨界点の向こう側にある高密度領域のクォーク・核物質に関する相図の研究を進める事ができた。

Reason

BNL研究所のRHIC加速器を用いたビーム・エネルギー走査実験を行い、QCD相図上の高温領域から高密度領域をカバーする衝突エネルギー領域において、2つの実験モード(衝突型と固定標的型において)収集した衝突実験データを解析し、それぞれのエネルギー領域における衝突系・反応領域の性質(ハドロン・バリオン生成、軽原子核、ハイパー原子核生成や、それらの集団運動、粒子相関、ゆらぎ、渦流、初期電磁場の生成)を調べる測定を行なった。これらによりクォーク・核物質の相構造や相転移の様子調べて、1次相転移や臨界点の探索研究を推進した。特に、固定標的実験モードによる重心系3GeVにおける金原子核同志の衝突実験において、集団運動、渦流、正味の陽子数分布のゆらぎに関する物理解析を行なった結果、これまでの研究で臨界点付近における臨界ゆらぎの兆しが見られたエネルギー領域より低いエネルギー領域では、そのゆらぎが抑制されハドロン相を仮定したモデルにより、良く再現されることを確認した。つまり、エネルギー走査実験をすることにより、臨界点付近の衝突系の「相」によるゆらぎの変化を捉える観測をした。また、第2期のビーム・エネルギー走査実験によるデータ解析の準備を行い、その測定のために新たに導入した検出器(ラピディティー領域拡大のための内部粒子飛跡TPC検出器、前方領域での粒子識別のための飛行時間TOF検出器、前方領域における生成粒子を用いた中心衝突度・反応平面EPD検出器)を用いた物理解析のための準備を進めた。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

これまでにRHIC加速器を用いるSTAR国際共同実験グループにおいて測定してきた第1期および第2期のビーム・エネルギー走査実験による衝突実験データ解析を行い、特に3GeVから30GeV領域における衝突系の多粒子相関及び保存量ゆらぎの解析を進め、衝突ビームエネルギー依存性と、衝突の幾何学的情報や、立体角に対する依存性に注目した物理解析を推進する。国際会議への参加や、国際研究会の開催を通して、本研究による高密度クォーク・核物質のQCD相構造に関する実験的研究の進展と、臨界点及び1次相転移の探索研究の現状を報告し、今後の実験的研究の計画を議論する。
