Outline of Final Research Achievements

The objective of this research project is to elucidate the nature of improvisational prelude performances in the 19th century, which cannot be fully understood through existing literature alone, by utilizing recorded materials from concerts and other settings. The study involved collecting and analyzing audio sources containing improvisational preludes, and examining how they relate to descriptions in 19th-century instructional texts. Furthermore, the research explored similarities between the introductory sections of musical compositions (such as preludes) and examples of improvised prelude performances (audio recordings).

As a result, a total of 63 instances of prelude performances were identified. Particularly abundant were examples from Josef Hofmann and Wilhelm Backhaus, which were central to the analysis.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究成果の学術的意義は、これまでスポットライトをほとんど浴びてこなかった、演奏する際の即興的前奏演奏の実践例（録音）に焦点をあてて詳細に調査したことにある。「消え物」であり「前座」的存在とみなされていた即興的前奏演奏であるが（しかも20世紀前半にはその演奏慣習自体もほとんど消滅してしまった）、録音された実践例を用いて文献情報のみからは捉えきれないその実態の解明に迫った。
本研究成果の社会的意義は、HIP（歴史的知識に基づく演奏）に興味が集まる昨今において、これまで手掛かりに欠けた前奏演奏の実践例を体系的に把握できるようにした点、そして記譜された楽譜の解釈に再考のヒントを与えた点にある。
