Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The year was oriented towards building on our applied linguistics research concerning hospital procedures and interactions, as well as our analysis of case reports. 2021 was spent planning the final stage of the project, and involved the planning and design of a mobile recording studio that can be brought into hospitals to create audio and video relating to hospital processes and procedures. The video can be used both for pedagogic purposes in English language course as well as for use by the hospitals themselves. The creation of the studio requires expertise outside the research team, and a decision was made to add an extra member, Marshall Higa, in 2022 to the kaken team. This addition provides the team with the specialist knowledge and skills to organize and build the studio. In 2021, the research team also planned the creation of a self-study online course with a focus on reading case reports, and also writing up standard cases as a step towards writing full case reports in the future. The course will be created on Moodle in 2022. Members of the research team presented findings at the Japan Society for Medical English Education in September 2021 and has also published the findings in the Journal of Medical English Education and in Hiroshima Studies in language and Language Education.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We have extended the research into 2022 because of the disruptions of the Covid pandemic.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We plan to create a Moodle online course for medical students that has a focus on case reports. We plan to build a mobile recording studio, and use it to make audio and video recordings at hospitals for use in teaching and for use by the hospitals themselves.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, in the second year of the kaken project, the members of the research team had to re-organize regular university language courses so that they were online. Consequently, the research fell behind schedule. In 2022, the team plans to build a new online medical English course and to create instructional video by using a portable recording studio built specifically for that purpose by a new member of the kaken team. Most of the spending for the final year will be on the construction of the recording studio and attendance at conferences.
