Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I have presented the results of this analysis at the 2019 Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT) conference and received feedback from other experts. Furthermore, I was accepted to present an updated analysis at the 2020 American Association of Applied Linguistics (AAAL) conference. Unfortunately, however, this conference was canceled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
While the Monbukagakusho policy analysis portion of my research is progressing smoothly, other aspects have inevitably been delayed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. For example, I planned to collect survey data from high school English teachers about their experiences with implementing the English Education Policy Reform initiatives. However, there are many uncertainties at present about when and home secondary level education will resume. I am waiting to contact school administrators and principles to solicit their participation in my research, as I anticipate that they are current overwhelmed with their response efforts to the pandemic. In the meantime, I have decided to shift my focus to an analysis of the most commonly used high-school level English textbooks (see below).

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I have drafted the questions for the survey of high school English teachers and am in the process of identifying which high school districts I will contact to solicit their participation in my research once the pandemic has subsided and normal education practices have resumed. I have also collected the 5 most commonly used textbooks in each category of English Education for the 2020 academic year and am preparing criteria for a systematic analysis of how they depict: 1) the phenomenon of English use in Japan and by Japanese people; and 2) the nature of globalization and its relation to the value or purpose of English use among Japanese. I will continue to prepare publication manuscripts and submit my work to leading domestic and international academic conferences.

Causes of Carryover |
While I spent most of the funds that were allocated for this year, disruptions related to the global COVID-19 pandemic prevented me from spending the full amount. For example, I planned to pay registration fees for a conference in the United States, but the conference was cancelled.
