Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The researcher conducted a critical discourse analysis of Monbukagakusho policy documents and MEXT-approved educational materials (i.e., high school-level English textbooks). Sole-authored, individual paper presentations describing the results of this analysis were accepted for competitive domestic and international conferences in 2019, 2020, and 2021. Taking feedback received at these conferences into consideration, the researcher is currently preparing article manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to ongoing COVID pandemic, the researcher has placed the main focus of inquiry on Monbukagakusho policy documents and educational materials (i.e., MEXT-approved English textbooks for the high school level). Additionally, the researcher has created a survey for high school English teachers that will be administered online in order to avoid the risk of COVID infection. The survey is ready for pilot testing. In the event that rates of COVID infection decrease and in-person data collection activities can be conducted safely, the researcher will request permission from high schools to interview English teachers and/or observe English lessons.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The researcher will contact high schools to request the participation of English teachers in the online survey. The researcher will also inquire about the possibility of in-person follow-up interviews and/or site visits in the event that rates of COVID infection decrease and such activities can be conducted safely. Furthermore, the researcher is currently preparing article manuscripts based on conference presentations analyzing Monbukagakusho policy documents and high school English textbooks.
