Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1.Extensive review of the literature conducted throughout 2019. In May a presentation was given at the ICATE (International Conference on Academic Teaching and Education) in Rome on preliminary results and analysis dealing with issues related to foreign faculty. 2. A paper reporting these results was submitted and is due to be published in spring of 2020 by the ONCUE Journal (College University Educators SIG within the Japanese Association for Language Teaching). 3. An online questionnaire survey of foreign faculty in Japan was created and carried out from July to September, receiving approximately 250 responses. The questionnaire consisted mainly of three 3 sections: 16 Demographic questions; 23 questions dealing with respondents' work environment as well as looking at their motivation and satisfaction for work; 12 Questions concerning foreign faculty daily life in Japan; and open-ended questions about employment at Japanese universities. 4. Report of demographic research results and descriptive statistics from the questionnaire was given at the Asian Conference on Education in Tokyo in November, 2019. Researchers benefited from the opportunity to make professional contacts with researchers from around the world. 5 November 2019 to January 2020, further statistical analysis was conducted on the results utilising SPSS,including descriptive statistics, factor analysis, an ANOVA, showing few significant differences between responses, Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient was conducted resulting in many significant correlations among questionnaire items,

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
1. A paper was written by both investigators, which included analysis and results from the multi-item questionnaire and was submitted to an academic journal at the end of March 2020, and is currently under review. 2. Due to the global COVID19 crisis, many plans for research and presentation of results were delayed. Plans to report on research results in March 22-26, 2020 at the Comparative International Education Society conference in Miami, Florida were cancelled, as was the International Higher Education Society conference sponsored by the Global Impact Institute to be held in Prague in April. The IHES Conference is to be rescheduled for later in 2020. 3. Also because of uncertainty surrounding the impact of the global coronavirus no further travel plans have been made to attend academic conferences or to travel for purposes of conducting research.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
1. Further investigation of foreign faculty issues and an expansion of research subjects is necessary to include a wider diversity of subjects employed in Japanese higher education. Further analysis of the questionnaire result may reveal insights into the impact employment satisfaction has on the daily lives of international faculty and their relationship and integration and adjustment to Japanese society. Ideally, the results from this aspect of foreign faculty will be reported on at an academic conference sometime in the fall of 2020, yet to be announced. 2. To uncover richer and more detailed information concerning the lives and welfare of foreign faculty a qualitative study consisting of ethnographic interviews will be conducted with approximately 13-15 foreign faculty working at Japanese universities in academic year 2020. This project was expected to begin in spring of 2020, but due to the impact of the global coronavirus crisis it will be delayed until at least summer or fall.

Causes of Carryover |
Further investigation will require another trip back to Japan to do field work and compensation for interview subjects. Also, interview transcription will require additional funding. The results from the quantitative study will be presented at international conferences and investigators will require funding to participate.
