Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
With Ph.D. student Irene Bonati, we finished development of the simulation codes, and we began to run models of inner core crystallization and potential for re-melting. This was included as a chapter in the dissertation of Dr. Bonati (graduated in March 2021), and is being formatted for journal submission. Another paper, regarding the subject of partial melting and instability of the inner core is also under preparation. I am now incorporating the latest mineral physics constraints on the Fe-H system, in collaboration with Professor Kei Hirose and his former student Dr. Sho Tagawa (we currently have a collaboration paper in press with Nature Communications). We did not have an opportunity to present our new results at a conference this year, owing to travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Although the COVID-19 pandemic presented some challenges, the project is moving forward with the engagement of a very good student. I am looking forward to publishing many interesting results in this coming year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I am ready to begin running calculations on the partial melting instability of the inner core. I already finished the linear stability analysis, and this is the last phase of the project according to the original plan.

Causes of Carryover |
Computing fees, equipment, and data storage. Travel to a conference if possible.
