Outline of Final Research Achievements

The study aims to develop a wide range of applications of titanium fluoride in dentistry, which is not widely used in Japan. The purpose of this study was 1) to estimate the effective concentration and pH of titanium fluoride for topical application to tooth structure and 2) to evaluate the effects of adding titanium fluoride to glass ionomer cement.
The results of this study showed that 0.5% titanium fluoride solution may be the lowest concentration for caries prevention, and there was no significant difference between slightly acidic to neutral solutions. Titanium fluoride appeared to be more effective than sodium fluoride for caries prevention at the same fluoride concentration and pH. The addition of glass ionomer cement increased the caries-preventive effect compared with the original cement, but did not improve the mechanical properties.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
