Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, the functions of “Michi-no-Eki” as a “Gateway” or “Regional center” were verified nationwide. The status and issues of utilization of the facility as a “disaster prevention center” and the current status of “Michi-no-Eki” for crisis management were clarified through field surveys and interviews with station managers and staff. In addition, we verified whether “Michi-no-Eki” can develop community business as a regional platform, based on the theoretical model of network externalities. These research results were presented at conferences and published in papers. During this study, we visited 602 “roadside stations” throughout Japan, of which 14 were “disaster-prevention roadside stations.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は、「道の駅」の防災拠点ならびに地域拠点としての機能や役割、課題を現地調査を通じて検証した。近年、自然災害などの被災に対して対応できる拠点として、「道の駅」の役割は大きく評価されている。また、地域振興に対して、「道の駅」が多様な主体（民間企業、大学・高専、道路関係者、DMO等）とのネットワーク化による連携も構築しつつある。このような新たな「道の駅」の活用に対して、それらを学術的に評価するものは少ない。本研究では、全国「道の駅」の実態調査ならびに産業組織論の理論枠組みのもと、その有効性を検証した。このような「道の駅」研究は、これまで少なく、一定の学術的意義や社会的意義があると考える。
