Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aimed to determine the public image and factors associated with the maintenance of social distance from spouses of people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among community residents. First, we conducted semi-structured interviews of the spouses of people with ASD to determine the concept of constructing self-stigma. Thereafter, a questionnaire survey was conducted for the community residents about the public image and social distance maintained from spouses of people with ASD. Responses were received from 1,320 subjects. The results revealed the presence of public stigma against spouses of people with ASD. We also found that public stigma and social distance are related and that there is a misunderstanding regarding spouses of people with ASD that suggests the need for a deeper understanding.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
