Outline of Final Research Achievements

Members of this research team have shared opinions that we had already made researches from the perspective of LAR compared with the researches on the ancient Roman religion which have been exerted for the first time by Prof. Rupke. This is because of the special political and social circumstances of Jewish people with hard experiences of destruction, deportation, and incessant foreign occupations by Babylonians, Greeks and Romans and of its identity building with the help of monotheism. However, this seems to be only a superficial impression before the careful reading of the master piece of Prof. Rupke. So the publication of the Japanese edition of his book will be the starting point of our new research on Jewish studies in the late ancient period based upon the new perspective of LAR. In addition, we could explain the processes of the development of Jewish religion from the ritualistic religion to the institutional religion.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

古代末期の宗教史を東地中海地域を焦点として考察することの意義は、この地域が、一神教の二つの流れの発祥地であり、ユダヤ人の広がりと、多様なキリスト教徒の誕生が顕著に見られ、イスラムの出現と急速な征服の対象となってからは、啓典の民・庇護民ズインミーとして、宗教別に社会が形成され制度化されるという宗教史の発展形態の独自性に求められる。その歴史的な展開を理解するためには、個別宗教の記述のみでは到底不十分であり、そのための方法論として、リュプケ氏の提起した「生きられた古代宗教」の理解は不可欠であることが確認され、彼の主著『パンテオン』の日本語版作成は今後のユダヤ研究の指標となることが強く期待される。
