Outline of Final Research Achievements

The phenomenon of Shakespeare worship in the 18th century has traditionally been viewed from a literary-historical perspective as the process by which the playwright Shakespeare became an idol and was transformed into the national poet. The research demonstrates that this was a cultural and economic event that was closely related to new social phenomena in 18th-century England, including the development of the media, technological innovations and the commodification of the cultural business. It also constructs a new history of Shakespeare's reception that is connected to the entertainment business today.

18世紀イングランドは、近年、その文化的・経済的な大変動が注目を集めている研究対象領域である。本研究は９名のメンバー全員の共同作業によって、この社会がシェイクスピア受容の新たな枠組みを生み出す歴史的経緯を検証、解明した。今日の社会との関わりで言えば、シェイクスピアとその劇作品が超優良コンテンツに作り変えられ、世界遺産的なアイコンとなっていく起源が、18世紀イングランド社会の変化にあったことを立証した。
