Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this study was to construct a new history of Africa from the perspective of local communities by looking at the cultural regionality of Africa through beads and at the same time understanding its historical transition in modern and contemporary times. The research is based on archival research, field observations, and interviews. African beads had different materials and social roles depending on the period and region. In addition, a new culture was created through the positioning of glass beads in each of the diverse societies.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまでアフリカ地域は、無文字社会が多いこともあって文献史学ではヨーロッパからみて未開な地域、文化の遅れた地域としてみなされてきた。しかしながら、ビーズ文化に焦点を当てる本研究によって、アフリカ社会は新たなビーズ製品をつくり新たな利用法も開発するという文化の創造力を保持することを示すことができた。また、これらの成果は、アフリカ史のなかで軽視されてきた社会史を補うという学術的な意義があるのみならず、世界のなかでのアフリカの特性を位置づけて真のアフリカの地域像を紹介する社会的な意義を持っている。
