Outline of Final Research Achievements

It is the purpose of this study to present an example of mutually complementary research methods between theory and practice into Bhakti studies, using Chaitanya school of Vrindavan as a case study. In the theoretical approach, we translated and analyzed the Bhakti Rasamrta Sindhu and the Bhagavata Purana, while in the practical approach, we conducted a field study of the Radha Raman temple, one of Vrindavan's major temples. Although we were unable to fully link theory and practice due to the limitations of field research, the project has led to the promotion of a research cooperation. If continued and maintained, this cooperation can be developed as a model case of “Bhakti research as an integrated study” in which theory and practice are intertwined.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の学術的意義は、インド学研究における宗教、哲学、文学、美術、社会、歴史などの様々な領域をつなげる際の軸として、バクティという民衆的宗教運動を挙げる点である。また、複数の研究者が協力して行うことは、学際的な観点からみれば、目新しいものではないが、人文学研究の分野では個々の独立性が強く、特に本邦の南アジア研究においては、中世を境に、古代哲学・思想を中心とした文献学的研究とフィールドワークを中心とした共時的かつ実践的な文化人類学的研究とに分断されてしまっている傾向がある現状に対し、両者の研究協力体制の促進にも繋がるものと考える。
