Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this study is to clarify open innovation through cross-border M&A. Specifically, it is to elucidate the process by which Toyota suppliers in the automotive industry create new value while utilizing cross-border M&A.
With the environment surrounding the automotive industry undergoing major changes, companies are facing an era in which it is difficult to achieve new growth simply by extending their existing businesses on their own. One effective way to break out of this situation is to actively utilize cross-border M&A. In order to maximize its effectiveness, it has become clear that it is necessary to ensure the autonomy of the acquired company in the post-M&A integration process.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

従来、日本企業は自前主義によって成長を目指すことが多いと言われてきたが、近年は日本企業が関連するM&Aの件数は増加傾向にある。しかし、海外企業を相手とするクロスボーダーM&Aについては、件数は増えてはいるものの、それを成功に導くことは容易ではない。本研究では、同業種や異業種におけるクロスボーダーM&Aを通じて、成長を目指しているトヨタ系サプライヤーを事例として、クロスボーダーM&Aや、オープンイノベーションの在り方について明らかにし、経営戦略や国際経営に関する学術的意義を提示することができた。
