Outline of Final Research Achievements

Fumarate respiration (FR) has also been implicated in cancer stem cells, with complex II of the mitochondrial respiratory chain playing a key role. It is becoming clear that some intractable cancers obtain the energy for proliferation from FR. Therefore, we developed a novel radioactive probe that enables FR activity to be ascertained via complex II imaging. In this study, we succeeded in synthesizing a new probe that can image mitochondrial respiratory chain complex II.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまでの難治性がんの診断・治療はがんの特性から非常に困難であり、これまでに多くの研究がなされてきた。本研究の成果は、難治性がんの診断・治療に新たな方向性をもたらすのもであり、フマル酸呼吸を標的とした新規抗がん剤や診断薬剤の開発に寄与するものと期待されるものであり、社会的意義を有するものである。また、学術的にもヒトには存在しないと考えられていたフマル酸呼吸の研究の進展にも寄与するものと期待される。
