Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is to empirically investigate how a cost shock affects price and welfare in the case where firms decide not only on price but also on quality. In particular, this study attempts to examine how these effects of a cost shock depend on market characteristics such as the number of firms and the functional form of demand.
The main outcomes of this study to date are twofold. First, I have established a new method for estimating a widely used class of demand models. Second, I have extended a theoretical framework needed to consider the variables used in the empirical analysis and to interpret the empirical results. In the extended framework, quality is endogenously determined by firms, while it is treated as exogenous in the existing framework used to investigate the effects of a cost shock.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
