| Research Abstract |
The coordinator and collaborative research team have made considerable discoveries through investigations in temples and produced the following results:
1. Research conference “Words, Deities, Icons: Exploring Ritual Performance in Pre-modern Japan,” CSJR Summer International Workshop 2011, London University SOAS, May 12-13, 2011. This conference aimed at establishing a new study of Buddhist services and rituals by analyzing the following fields from multiple perspectives: religious texts, statues and temple spaces, and icons and paintings.
2. Research conference “Beyond Sectarianism - New Horizons for Interdisciplinary Studies in Japanese Buddhism,” Harvard University International Symposium, May 17- 18, 2012.In this conference, the researchers discussed the possibility of new Buddhism research that transcends sectarianism, based on an awareness of the problems and limitations in understanding Japanese Buddhism denominationally. These research conferences explored new directions for Buddhism research from two aspects: Buddhist services and rituals as a framework and sectarianism and worship as an inner religiosity.
