| Research Abstract |
This study examined changes in caregiving that resulted from the implementation and the consecutive reform of the long-term care insurance (LTCI) system. Five repeated cross-sectional surveys and three panel surveys were conducted between 1996 and 2002 with a probability sample of community-dwelling caregivers of frail elderly people living in a suburb of Tokyo metropolis. These results suggest that the levels of existing service benefits are insufficient to improve caregivers' psychological burden. In addition, deteriorating economic conditions may impose psychological strain on caregivers.
