Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aims to diachronically clarify the uniqueness of the representation of "dreams" in traditional Japanese theater (Noh, Ningyo Joruri, and Kabuki) from the perspective of comparative theater.
The three researchers have made a total of four presentations at international conferences, discussing the representation of "dreams" from the perspectives of Noh, Ningyo Joruri, and Kabuki. As a result of this series of discussions, it became clear that Noh plays creatively experience the time and space of dreams through the frame structure of the narrative, i.e., they are not represented on stage, whereas Kabuki and Ningyo Joruri directly represent the time and space of dreams on stage through devices and large props.
Based on these findings, we plan to publish a research book in English in a few years.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

研究代表者および研究分担者は、いずれも本研究によって得られた知見を国際学会にて発表している。これまでかえりみられることのなかった演劇における「夢」の表象について、その成果をひろく海外に問うた。
文学における夢の表象に関しては、江口孝夫『日本古典文学　夢についての研究』（風間書房、1987）があり、夢の精神史一般については石橋臥波『夢』（宝文館、1907）をはじめとして古川哲史『夢　日本人の精神史』（有心堂、1967）などがある。しかし、これらは文字に定着した材源をもとにしており、文字をさらに身体によって立体化した演劇というメディアの特性にまで言及していない。本研究の独自性をもつ所以である。
